How do I properly clean and care for my copper mug?

Copper mugs might be specialty cups for your Moscow Mule, but that doesn't mean they are a pain to clean. After you finish your cocktail, simply rinse the copper mug with warm, soapy water and dry it immediately. Your mugs will last longer if you take the time to care for them after each use. Keep in mind that copper mugs are not dishwasher or microwave safe.  As copper is a natural metal, your mugs will develop a patina over time.  To keep them looking new and polished, use a copper cleaner, like Midas Touch Metal Polishing Cream. For additional information, refer to our care page.

Are your mugs lined with nickel, tin or unlined or coated? Can copper leach into the beverage?

Our copper mugs are made of 100% unlined copper. The exterior is coated with a food-safe lacquer, while the interior remains raw copper to provide the full benefits of drinking from copper. Although beverages with low pH levels can cause some copper to leach into the drink, the amount is highly unlikely to reach levels that could cause illness, even when drinking Moscow Mules. For more details, please refer to our blog.

Are there drinks that should and should not be consumed from a copper cup? Any that are enhanced with a copper mug?

Is it safe to enjoy all beverages in a copper mug as long as you do not warm the mug in a microwave or use a dishwasher to clean. Since copper is a conductive metal, warm liquids can run the risk of burning. Moscow Mules are known to be enhanced by copper mugs because vodka oxidizes the mug bringing out the cistris flavors and its internal structure keeps chilled beverages cooler for longer.

Are there health risks to drinking from copper mugs? Is it safe for children and pregnant women?

Even though copper occurs naturally in the environment and is necessary in our bodies, copper over-exposure can cause you to experience nausea, dizziness, headaches, diarrhea, and irritation to your mouth, nose, and eyes.

However, most experts agree that drinking Moscow Mules or non-alcoholic beverages out of unlined copper mugs will not cause any negative health effects. Moscow Copper Co. only sells unlined copper mugs.

What are the benefits of drinking water from copper mugs?

The practice of drinking water after sitting in a copper cup, mug or pot overnight is an Ayurvedic practice for wellness. It is popular in India and Asia where water quality is especially poor.

Copper has antibacterial and anti-microbial qualities, meaning it can improve the quality of contaminated water. In fact, copper can kill S. aureus, E. coli and even the Covid virus. Bacteria and viruses cannot survive more than a few minutes on the surface of a copper mug. There are a few scientific studies that have confirmed these claims.

Why does my copper mug have spots or discoloration?

Spots and discoloration are natural characteristics of handcrafted copper mugs. These occur during the artisanal process and are a testament to the traditional methods used to create each piece. They do not affect the functionality or durability of the mug. In fact, these imperfections add charm and authenticity, making each mug one of a kind.

How do I prevent tarnishing on my copper mug?

Tarnishing is a natural process for copper over time. To prevent it, wash your mug by hand using mild soap and water, then dry it immediately with a soft cloth. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners. Additionally, applying a copper polish occasionally will help maintain the mug’s shine and remove any tarnish that develops.

What should I do if I think my mug has a manufacturing defect?

While we take pride in our rigorous quality control, rare instances of manufacturing defects may occur. If you believe your mug has a defect, please contact us immediately. We stand behind our product and will work with you to resolve the issue to your satisfaction.

Are the black spots on my copper mug a defect?

Black spots are not defects but natural outcomes of the handcrafted process. These minor imperfections occur when skilled artisans mold and polish the copper, giving each mug its unique character. They reflect the authenticity of a handcrafted item and are not present in mass-produced alternatives.

Can I put my copper mug in the dishwasher?

No, copper mugs should never go in the dishwasher. Dishwashers use harsh detergents and high temperatures that can damage the copper and cause excessive tarnishing or discoloration. Always hand wash your mug with mild soap and water for best results.

What’s the best way to remove tarnish from my copper mug?

To remove tarnish, use a specialized copper polish or create a homemade solution with lemon juice and salt. Rub the polish or solution gently onto the mug with a soft cloth, then rinse with warm water and dry thoroughly. Regular polishing will help maintain the mug’s natural shine.
