A cold, frosty drink is the perfect complement to a summer celebration, which makes our Fourth of July Moscow Mule recipe a great choice for celebrating America's independence.
This drink is served in our signature Moscow Mule copper mugs, which are excellent conductors for the chill of the drink, making each sip icy-cold when it hits your lips. The mugs will shine with cooling condensation on the outside of the copper mugs for drinks that look as cold as they taste.
There's nothing like a Moscow Mule for a hot day outside, so let's dive into how to make a flag-themed take on this classic!
How to Make Fourth of July Moscow Mules
Our Fourth of July take gives the classic Moscow mule recipe a patriotic twist with blueberries and sliced strawberries. The berries not only add cheerful stars-and-stripes colors, but also help sweeten the aromatic profile.
Fourth of July Moscow Mule Ingredients
- 2 ounces vodka for each drink
- 1 ounce fresh lime juice for each drink
- 4-6 ounces ginger beer for each drink
- Crushed ice
- Fresh mint leaves, for garnish
- Blueberries for garnish
- Lime wedges, for garnish
Fourth of July Moscow Mule Equipment
- Refrigerator (to chill mugs)
- Two Moscow Mule copper mugs
- Long-handled bar spoon
- Jigger
Instructions
- Begin by chilling your copper Moscow Mule mugs in the refrigerator for at least 10 minutes. (Chilled mugs will help keep your cocktail colder for longer.) You can also place them inside a cold drinks cooler if you're outside.
- Once the mugs are adequately chilled, remove them from the refrigerator. Fill each mug with crushed ice.
- Pour 2 ounces of vodka into each mug. This can vary, but usually the larger side of the jigger has a 2-ounce capacity (as with our own double-sided jigger).
- Squeeze fresh lime juice, approximately 1 ounce, into each mug.
- Now, pour 4-6 ounces of ginger beer into each mug. Adjust the quantity based on your personal preference for a stronger or lighter drink.
- Use a long-handled bar spoon to gently stir the ingredients in each mug, ensuring they are thoroughly mixed. Be careful not to bruise the mint leaves if you choose to add them at this stage.
- Next, it's time to add a patriotic touch to your Moscow Mule! Garnish each drink with fresh mint leaves, blueberries, sliced strawberries, and lime wedges. You can either scatter the blueberries to float at the top of the drink, or spear several on a toothpick and rest it on the lip. The strawberries can either hang on the lip of the mug or be speared in an alternating pattern with the blueberries.
- Give the cocktail one final gentle stir to ensure all the flavors are combined. The copper mugs not only lend an elegant look to your drink but also help keep it refreshingly cool.
- Serve your Copper Moscow Mule Mugs immediately and enjoy this refreshing and festive cocktail with your friends and family as you celebrate the Fourth of July.
Remember to drink responsibly and savor each sip! These cocktails should keep cold to cool down partygoers for quite some time.
About the Ingredients
Once you understand the ingredients in mixology recipes, you can make smart substitutions and adjust the flavors to your liking. Here's more on each ingredient in our Fourth of July Moscow Mule recipe, as well as the role it plays in the drink.
Crushed Ice
Keeps the drink cool and makes for an elegant presentation. Crushed ice distributes throughout the drink and adds to the cooling sensation. This handy crushed ice tray is an easy way to have the perfect crushed iced at the ready, every time.
Vodka
Vodka's smooth, crisp taste pairs perfectly with the other ingredients in this cocktail.
Lime Juice
The tangy citrus flavor of lime adds a refreshing zing to the Moscow Mule.
Ginger Beer
The ginger beer brings a delightful fizz and a spicy kick, giving your cocktail a unique twist. It's what makes a Moscow Mule a Moscow Mule!
Blueberry and Strawberry Garnish
The vibrant colors of the blueberries and strawberries beautifully represent the red and white of the American flag. By slicing the strawberries, you'll add a hint of berry flavor alongside the sweet aromas of the berries. You can either scatter the blueberries across the top and rest the strawberries on the rim, or use a toothpick to create a berry garnish.
Mint and Lime Garnish
Adds a fresh, citrusy aroma to round out the sensory experience.
Why Moscow Mules on the Fourth of July?
"Moscow" may be in the name, but the classic copper mugs and signature drink have a distinctly American history. Sophie Berezinski immigrated to the United States in 1941 search of opportunity: to find a market for the copper mugs she and her father had crafted.
In a twist of American ingenuity and entrepreneurship, Sophie worked with the owner of a vodka company and a pub owner brewing up ginger beer to create a refreshing cocktail that combined their three offerings.
Today, Moscow Mules are a classic and beloved choice all across the United States. They've even been enjoying a recent surge in popularity amongst craft cocktail lovers. They're just one of the many inventions created by people who moved to the United States in order to make their dreams come true.
So raise a toast to the land of opportunity with this red-and-white twist on a classic Moscow Mule! With its crisp vodka, zesty lime juice, spicy ginger beer, and vibrant garnishes, this drink will be a hit at your Fourth of July gathering.
